The Encyclopedia of Popular Music--REF ML102 .P66 G84 1998

This is a great source for biographies from the 90’s (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains) as well as from other decades: 80's (Aerosmith, Megadeth, Slayer), 70's (Black Sabbath), 60's (Jefferson Airplane), etc. There is everything from Jazz to Rock to Classical/Pop Music (Kronos Quartet).

 

            Popular Musicians--REF ML105 .P66 1999

Use this source for artist's from the late fifties to the present. Has musicians like the Bee Gees, Pat Benetar, Beck, Natalie Cole, The Carpenters, Bjork. 

 

All Music Guide to Rock--REF ML156.9 .A39 1997

Not only does this rate and review over 11,000 recordings, it also profiles 1,800 Musicians. Great for researching a specific rock album, or for biographical material.

 

The Marshall Cavendish Illustrated History of Popular Music--REF ML 3470 .M36 1989 (In Circulating and Reference Stacks)

A comprehensive encyclopedia set that covers the years 1955--1989. Highlights a specific two year span in music.

Heavier than Heaven: a Biography of Kurt Cobain--ML420 .C59 C76 2001

A revealing biography about Cobain’s struggles, exploring childhood, early days as a musician, co-creating the band Nirvana, fame, and the events that led up to his death in 1994.

 

Riders on the Storm--ML419 .D46 A3 1991

Written by Door's drummer John Densmore, this Doors biography is an excellent source.

                               

SHOUT! The Beatles in Their Generation--ML421 .B4 N65

Published a year after John Lennon's death, this biography is authored by Philip Norman, a man that covered the Beatles since 1968.

This is a wonderful guide to American Popular music, including rock, covering 21 major cities, including Seattle. Great for geographical information on rock musicians and movements.

 

The Secret History of Rock--ML3534 .S27 1998

This book is dedicated to bands you've probably never heard, but have contributed greatly to rock music.

 

Rock 100 Essential CDs (Rough Guide)--ML3534 .S645 1999

Indexed by performer, this has great albums like Mixed Up (The Cure), Nothing's Shocking (Jane's Addiction) and The Hissing of Summer Lawns (Joni Mitchell).

 

The Official MP3.com Guide to MP3--MT723 .R65 1999

This is a great tutorial on how to download the MP3 software, and how to search for downloadable music. Recommended!
